How to use Portolando maps

Portolando.eu is buildeded on a map (Google maps) where markers (“virtual pins”) identify the ports and accesses covered by the project.
By clicking on a marker a table will open containing a lot of information about the maritime structure or the selected access.
The map can be controlled through specific commands:

Viewing mode

The three buttons on the top right allow three types of viewing modes, namely map, satellite or hybrid map.
The viewing mode is ‘Map’ by default; by pressing the ‘Satellite’ button it is possible to switch to the satellite view containing photographic images of the territory in question, whereas by pressing the “Hybrid” button a satellite map will appear overlapped by another one indicating names of locations, geographical boundaries and, when using the zoom, even the name of the streets.

Zoom mode

On the top left there is a graduated line that can be used as a scrollbar to change the zoom level, i.e. to zoom in or out.
Initially the zoom is set half way through, in the middle. The maps can be navigated by dragging the mouse up (zoom in) or down (zoom out).

Map scrolling

Above the zoom tool there is a map scrolling tool.
It is made up of four arrow buttons indicating North, South, East and West, as well as a central button which, once pressed, will restore the map to the centre and at the original zoom level.
By pressing each of the four N, S, E and W arrows the map will shift to the chosen direction, allowing the user to reach any other view of the world.
Shifting is possible, besides using the tool, using the dragging function.
By keeping the left mouse button pressed, the cursor will take the shape of a hand “holding” the map. At that point, just as if the screen were a sheet of paper, any movement of the mouse (keeping the left button pressed) will cause the map to move in the chosen direction.

Map population

The left side of the page contains the query frame.
The frame should help the user to choose the map population using the markers relating to the accesses or the ports.
The term ‘port’ means all the port facilities described (docks, marinas, moorings, berths).
Each of these structures has specific features that can be selected or deselected in order to view only what the user wishes to examine.
Pressing the ‘Search’ button, without a specific query, will display all accesses or ports.

MARKER

The markers displayed are of two types:

marker that identifies an access

marker that identifies the portual structures

Once the map is populated with the markers, by passing the top of the mouse over each of them, will cause a text to be displayed showing the name and type of facility.
Once the facility desired has been identified, it will be possible to click on the marker to generate the superimposed table with the required information.

Informations

There are two types of overlapping tables, one dedicated to the accesses, and one to the port structures (docks, marinas, harbours, berths and moorings).

Table of information relating to the port facilities
The overlay table is divided into three folders: Info, Maritime Area, Hinterland.
Each folder, which can be opened by clicking on the link located on the footer of the folder, contains specific information about the concerned topic.

Info
In this folder the salient features of the facility can be viewed at a glance:  Type, name, address, coordinates, and an ‘info’ button that opens up a page with a general table describing all the services and information on the facility.

Maritime Area
This is the folder containing the information about the area where the facility is located. It is made up of specific links related to the follows: real-time weather informations , description of the maritime area, video clips, links to the main local institutional websites , tips from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hinterland
Traditions, culture, gastronomy and farm tourism.
Agrislove.net provides useful information to explore the hinterland. A rich guide of the territory that focuses on typical products, farm tourism, recipes and culture. An extremely useful vademecum when going ashore.
