How does Portolando work?

Portolando.eu is the extended interpretation of the guide “Portolando – Guida ai porti e approdi dell’Alto Adriatico – Veneto Slovenia” (Portolando – Guide to the ports and berths of the North Adriatic Sea – Veneto Slovenia) published by Touring Club ItalianoExternal link..
The purpose of the website is to help users, through quick on-line consultation and visual display, to obtain information about the features of the port facilities offered by the territories involved in the project.

The development of Portolando.eu is based on the glocal and
mashup
External link concepts, i.e. the use of global resources to promote local areas combined together.
For this reason, the entire website has been created with a view to integrate the wealth of information generated by the project with the information about the concerned territory.
Thus, the territory changes its boundaries, extending them thanks to the mash up generated by the sources that have relied on the territorial information to produce the material available on the Web.

Mash up. Mixing for a sharper result.

The statement may seem a contradiction, however, by combining several information sources on the same topic means providing more complete contents.
The contents of this website are the result of a mix of free-of-charge and freely usable sources.

Google MapsExternal link is at the base of the Portolando.eu structure.
Google Maps is a free resource provideded from GoogleExternal link that allows to explore the Earth using both satellite and other types of maps (hybrid).
Google Maps allows maps to be customised by using coloured markers or "virtual pins" that indicate an identifiable location.
Portolando.eu locates the ports included in the project through graphical markers that indicate the exact geographical location (based on latitude N and longitude E coordinates).

MASH UP: Informations, informations, informations

When clicking on a marker, a window opens up displaying accurate data about the port in question as well as the links to free resources available on the Web for that specific geographical location.
The description of the port and land area becomes therefore as complete as possible thanks to the mash up between:

  • information contributions about the ports in the North Adriatic Sea:

Portolando, Guide to the ports and berths of the North Adriatic Sea – Veneto Slovenia;

  • information contributions about the hinterland:

agrislove.netExternal link, the cross-border portal of Venetian and Slovenian holiday farms;

  • the weather in real time:

weather.comExternal link, the most famous meteorological website worldwide;

  • video contributions:

youtube.comExternal link, the most famous video broadcasting website

  • ad hoc information contributions:

wikipedia.orgExternal link the free encyclopaedia

  • institutional contributions

    links to local institutional websites of the area

From web to desktop

The searches and dynamic selections that each user can do on the panel that generates the map can be visualized on-line but also exported to another widely known and free tool: Google EarthExternal link.

Your personal Google Earth will therefore be enriched with the Portolando markers, including a mini card that will refer to the website address where the markers come from.
The information available on the site thus exits the online mode and switches to the offline mode, mixing up with your information and broadening your preference area and personal notes.
